Wyn Williams Selected To Stand As Montgomeryshire AM

11.59.13am GMT Fri 19th Feb 2010

Local farmer and businessman Wyn Williams has been selected to be the new Assembly candidate for Montgomeryshire Liberal Democrats in the 2011 Assembly election.

Mick Bates AM announced his retirement last year, and Montgomeryshire Liberal Democrats started the selection process in autumn 2009.

The final decision was made at a packed Hustings meeting in Newtown on Thursday 18th February.

Wyn said, "I am honoured to have been selected as the Lib Dem's Assembly Candidate for Montgomeryshire. My first priority is to do all I can to help Lembit Öpik and the Liberal Democrats win the upcoming General Election campaign.

"I will always put the interests of local people first. The current schools crisis shows that, all too often, it is assumed by outsiders that urban solutions can be applied in rural areas. My goal is to ensure that, in the current economic crisis, Montgomeryshire is not forgotten by the Assembly.

"A sustained recovery will rely on the private sector, especially small and medium sized businesses, to create jobs locally in Montgomeryshire. A business environment will need to be created centring on getting rid of red tape; moderate taxes and ensuring that there is a flow of credit on competitive terms.

"I will be a full time candidate for the Assembly, and a full time Assembly Member if elected."

Lembit Öpik MP adds, "Wyn is a fantastic candidate for the Assembly. He is a local Welsh-speaker who fully understands the needs of local people. He has my full support."
