Newport Petition against Closure

12.00.00am GMT Tue 2nd Mar 2010

Newport Liberal Democrats have had a massive response to their petition against the closure of the Royal Mail Sorting & Delivery Office in Newport. In their February Focus newsletter, which was delivered to houses in the town, it was pointed out that centralisation of this sort of facility inevitably leads to higher costs, greater use of time, damage to the environment, and rarely if ever results in an improved service. The Lib Dems asked recipients to support the retention of this facility in Newport, as its closure would cause hardship to the elderly, and those without access to a car.

Over 200 people returned the forms, and local Lib Dems can be seen outside the Delivery Office with the bundles of petitions which have been sent to Royal Mail with a letter asking that the closure be reconsidered. Newport is also faced with the possible closure of its Community Recycling Centre, in favour of creating 2 or 3 'super sites' elsewhere in the Borough. This would mean Newport people having to travel further, costing more for both residents and the environment. It would also tend to discourage people from recycling, when Newport does well in this area, by making use of the present site in Station Road.

Only the Liberal Democrats have been regularly taking action on behalf of local residents. They have been keeping people in touch with what is going on, by delivering Focus newsletters to residents all year round. If you would like to help the Lib Dems in the run-up to the general election, please do so through this website, or via the contact details on the back of each Focus.
