Lib Dems announce their candidate for The Wrekin

12.00.00am GMT Sat 6th Mar 2010

At an all-members meeting in Newport on 5 March, the Wrekin & Telford Liberal Democrats approved well-known local councillor, David Murray, as their candidate for The Wrekin.

David moved to the West Midlands to work for GKN in 1986, and lives in the constituency. With a wealth of business experience in new product development, he is particularly concerned about the nationwide decline in manufacturing, and lack of investment in our future. The current situation is not helped by the bailed-out banks refusing loans to around half of commercial applicants.

Alongside his professional skills, David Murray has an active interest in local government, being first elected to public office in 1970. He was a Bridgnorth district councillor from 2003-09, and still serves on local councils in the area. He told the meeting that the Liberal Democrats offer the best chance of achieving a fairer society. "Labour are now promising a future fair for all, but this implies a past that has been unfair for all, with many people feeling let down by Blair and Brown. The gap between rich and poor continues to widen, and it is unlikely that the Conservatives will do anything to upset the multi-millionaire donors to their party. In contrast, the Lib Dems are promoting a fairer tax system, a fair start in life for every child, a fair deal for the environment, and a fairer voting system that will encourage more people to participate."

As a parent and grandparent, he understands the stresses and strains in bringing up a family, and believes more should be done to provide help during the crucial early years. David is concerned about the lack of progress in reducing child poverty, and the fact that the UK came out the lowest of 21 industrialised countries in a UNICEF report on the well-being of children and young people.

He welcomes the opportunity to take the Lib Dem message to a wider audience, convinced that there is now a possibility of achieving a real change for the better in our society, after years of increasing disenchantment with the politics and politicians of the two major parties. "It is time people gave us the chance to implement the fairer society that everyone talks about, but only the Lib Dems can deliver, with practical solutions to the economic problems we face." David concluded.
