Öpik meets with Hain to discuss fairer business rates for Montgomeryshire

3.22.47pm GMT Tue 9th Mar 2010

Montgomeryshire MP Lembit Öpik has this week been involved in talks with Secretary of State for Wales, Peter Hain, about the unjustly high business rates imposed on small businesses in Montgomeryshire.

In the meeting led by Mark Williams ideas were discussed to combat these high rates to improve prospects for local businesses and give them a much needed boost of confidence in the current economic situation.

Lembit said: "Too many local businesses are now suffering because of these incredibly high rates, I know that Mr Hain is currently working on a local case in Montgomeryshire, which I am very grateful for.

He adds: "The meeting was very constructive, Peter Hain considered all points put to him, I found him to be very accessible and pro-active, a real credit to his department. I hope this meeting is a step in the right direction."
